Get wisdom. Get understanding. do not forget it. – Proverbs 4:5

There’s no particular method for gaining wisdom. Wisdom can be gained almost everywhere and anytime. Even if we quiet our mind, remove our self from the outer world, we can gain wisdom from the silence within us.

Experience can give us wisdom. It does not have to be personal experience, it can be from others. We cannot go through every experience by our self. Life’s short but we have unlimited amount of learning capability. Thus we can learn and gain wisdom through experience of other people. Every experience should be counted, good or bad.

If we constantly learn from experiences, we will gain wisdom and become wiser. From experience, we learn to think better and make better choices in life. By thinking better and making better choices, we improve our life. By improving our life, we make good life. That’s the purpose of wisdom, to help us make good life. To make good life is then the purpose of our life.

Our life are made by the choices we took. People does not seem to realize this. They do not analyze their circumstances yet they blame outer things if anything goes wrong. A wise person will analyze the whole circumstance from the start to the end. He knows he creates or attracts every circumstance he experience.

Observation gives us more wisdom. Observe people and everything that happens around us and them. Although wisdom can be found everywhere, it’s beyond ordinary physical senses. We must look and see beyond to gain wisdom and be wiser. Every circumstance or event have its lesson for us, nothing is perfectly bad or good.

This world is created in balance. For every dark side, there’s an equal amount of light side. Wise people look at the light side more than the dark side. At the same time, they do not ignore the dark side. They look at the dark side only once to find the reason it exist in their life. A wise person knows exactly how to extract wisdom from both light and dark.

Young or old, both of them provides wisdom to one another. Every human has something to teach and every human has something to learn. Learning and gaining wisdom is never ending process. When people are talking, we should listen to them and find out what we can gain from their talking or behavior. Wilson Mizner have said “A good listener is not only popular everywhere, but after awhile, he knows something.”

The phrase “This Too Shall Pass” came from Jewish wisdom folktale, involving King Solomon. I love the phrase and the story that originated the phrase.

Have you heard of the story? There are many version available but I took the one I found on wikipedia (as of 23rd April 2009) and made some editing, here it is:

One day, King Solomon decided to humble Benaiah Ben Yehoyada, his most trusted minister. King Solomon said to him, “Benaiah, there is a certain ring that I want you to bring to me. I wish to wear it for Sukkot which gives you six months to find it.”

Benaiah replied, “If it exists anywhere on earth, your majesty, I will find it and bring it to you but what makes the ring so special?”

King Solomon answered, “It has magic powers, if a happy man looks at it, he becomes sad, and if a sad man looks at it, he becomes happy.” King Solomon knew that no such ring existed in the world but he wished to give his minister a little taste of humility.

Spring passed, then summer and still Benaiah had no idea where he could find the ring. On the night before Sukkot, he decided to take a walk in one of the poorest quarters of Jerusalem.

He passed by a merchant who had begun to set out the day’s wares on a shabby carpet. Benaiah asked, “Have you by any chance heard of a magic ring that makes the happy wearer forget his joy and the broken-hearted wearer forget his sorrows?”

He watched the grandfather take a plain gold ring from his carpet and engrave something on it. When Benaiah read the words on the ring, his face broke out in a wide smile.

That night the entire city welcomed in the holiday of Sukkot with great festivity. King Solomon asked, “Well, my friend, have you found what I sent you after?” All the ministers laughed and Solomon himself smiled. To everyone’s surprise, Benaiah held up a small gold ring and declared, “Here it is, your majesty!”

As soon as Solomon read the inscription, the smile vanished from his face. The jeweler had written three Hebrew letters on the gold band: gimel, zayin, yud, which began the words Gam zeh ya’avor — This too shall pass. At that moment Solomon realized that all his wisdom and fabulous wealth and tremendous power were but fleeting things, for one day he would be nothing but dust.

Abraham Lincoln made the phrase and story popular in his ‘Address Before the Wisconsin State Agricultural Society, Milwaukee, Wisconsin’ on September 30, 1859.

It is said an Eastern monarch once charged his wise men to invent him a sentence, to be ever in view, and which should be true and appropriate in all times and situations. They presented him the words: “And this, too, shall pass away.” How much it expresses! How chastening in the hour of pride! How consoling in the depths of affliction! – Abraham Lincoln

Wisdom can mean “ability to judge correctly and to follow the best course of action, based on knowledge and understanding.” That’s one of the definitions I found on the Internet. There are variety definitions of wisdom and every person would probably come with something different than the other. However, it all goes back to living life in the right way.

Every person show their wisdom in different manner. The best manner comes from the wise people. Their wisdom involves deep understanding and acting in correct way. The wise people with wisdom views life and experiences in larger perspective than the ordinary. Other than that, wikipedia mentioned wisdom to be “having intuitive understanding.”

There are some people assume wisdom to be the knowledge you gain from life experiences, which develops your common sense. Doing the right thing at the right time, wisdom guides us to proper way of behaving. Furthermore, people with good common sense can be assumed to have good amount of wisdom.
